Linguistic diversity is even greater than the demographic diversity of Asian, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander populations. Some countries, such as Japan, have one language; some like China, have several languages that all use either traditional or simplified script; and some countries like India have several languages and scripts. A variety of dialects (i.e. regional varieties in vocabulary, grammar or pronunciation) are attached to all languages. In formerly colonized countries, the language of the colonial power may be falling out of use (e.g., Spanish in the Philippines) or may be widely spoken (English being the obvious example). Immigrants and refugees may sometimes be more fluent in a language other than their native tongue (e.g., Bhutanese from refugee camps in Nepal speak Nepali).
The API Institute has compiled a list of translated materials produced by domestic violence programs around the country.
This list encompasses over 500 items that include brochures, forms, manuals, legal glossaries, and more,in 32 Asian and Pacific Islander languages.
